Corbin LOVED being a day camp counselor. She would come home every night and make us laugh with stories of the day. Our all-time favorite was her recounting of the annual “Salami Day” events. 🙂
And so, Thanks To You, this week we are happy to report that Corbin’s Legacy has assisted children in need in Day Camps across the country. Here is one great highlight:
We were contacted by 2 teenagers who are working as counselors in a day camp dedicated to serving at risk children aged 5-12. The camp is 5 days a week from 9-3. Transportation is provided but lunch and swim gear (suit, goggles, flop flops and towels) are not. These counselors (who themselves suffer from food insecurity) noticed that 6 of their 13 campers had no lunches and did not swim. While they were happy to bring any extra food that they could find and divide their lunches up every day to give to their campers, providing swim gear for them proved more complicated. “They are not our size”. So, these 2 counselors went on Facebook and typed in “help kids”, found Corbin’s Legacy and filled in the 9 line request form. We contacted the camp and spoke to these two caring 16 year olds and then (because they are minors) the director who told us that there are 150 kids at the camp, 60 of which regularly go without lunch or swimming.
Corbin’s Legacy purchased 60 swim suits, towels, goggles and flip flops and complete lunches for those children every day for the rest of the camp season. We also sent food gifts cards to the two counselors for good measure.
We are grateful to you, our supporters, the counselors and the camp director for allowing us to negotiate and participate in a safe and life changing solution for these children.
No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.
