In Just The Last 2 Weeks:

kids

Corbin’s Legacy assisted 25 children with food to take home in cinch sacks for the weekend, 11 children with food cards, 10 children with clothing cards, 8 children with hot lunches for a month, 6 children with medical examinations, 4 children with drug prescriptions, 2 children with dental exams and 1 child with eyeglasses.  We also got a thank you note (which we love receiving) that said, “thank you for the weekend food.  I shared with my brother and sister and mother and father.  We ate until Sunday.  Even my parents”.  Needless to say, we sent her family a food card as well.

No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.

One in Five Children Live in Food Insecure Homes

cafeteria

This week we helped children around the nation return to school with supplies, uniforms, required medical and dental exams and of course, food.  One in five elementary school children live in food insecure homes.  Here is just one teacher’s story:

“You are probably too busy to help this week but I have a student, a first grader, who is hungry.  At least I think she is.  She doesn’t speak English, yet (I’ll make sure she does by the end of the school year) and neither does her mom.  So far I have been feeding them both every morning with food that I bring from home:  I think she gets hot lunch but I make sure to give her an afternoon snack (mine) before she leaves for the day.”

Corbin’s Legacy is never too busy to assist and we did help!  We called the school and discovered that this child (and six others) were not getting free hot lunches because the paperwork had not been executed.  We paid for all six to get hot lunches every school day for a month.  We also send food gift cards home with these children.  And arranged for a member of the PTO to navigate the free and reduced meal applications for these families.

No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.

Elana’s Story

BackToSchool

Thanks to You This Week:

We were able to help, nationally, many children eagerly going or getting ready to go back to school with basic needs that would otherwise go unmet.  This is just one heartwarming story…

The nine line request form read like this, “my name is elana and iam in the eight grade.  I not asking for me but my sister and brother.  They in K an 1.  I have no money for their school supplies or unforms.  Can you help?

We can and we did.  We called Elana’s school and discovered that she is an honor student who is responsible for her younger siblings.  She herself, borrows all her school supplies and uniforms.  We got her school supply list, uniform size and made sure she was registered for and going to receive free meal services.  We did the same thing at the elementary school.

Corbin’s Legacy sent Elana and her two sibling’s food, clothing and school supply gift cards.  The middle school guidance counselor volunteered to take Elana and her sister and brother shopping to make sure that got everything that they needed.  It does take a village.

No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.

Staying Safe & Staying in School

computer

This Week Corbin’s Legacy has helped all children in grades K-5 at a Women’s Shelter in Kentucky.  It is often too dangerous or logistically complicated to allow these youngsters to regularly attend school.  So, we arranged to supply the school identified by the Shelter with one computer and cart (on wheels, with a lock and variable height options as per the janitor) per grade (6 set-ups in all) and 6 computers (1 per grade) at the Shelter.  Both the Shelter and the School have Wi-Fi and Internet.  Each day, any child that cannot attend school will Skype into their classroom for the day.  As an added bonus the school has received the OK to count these children as officially “present” for administrative purposes.

No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.

It Takes a Village

Bible

Thanks to You This Week Corbin’s Legacy joined with the Clergy of many denominations to help children in need around the nation.

Each request began similarly, “I’m not sure you can help but I’m a (fill in the religious leader’s title) and I have a child who needs (fill in food, clothing, medical care, etc.)”.

Our response – every time – “Yes, we can and will help”.

Here is one heartwarming story from a Reverend in Oklahoma:

“We always try and take care of own and believe that the Almighty will provide, but sometimes the need is so great and there is just not enough to go around.  This is one of those times.   We have three families, all hard working, who just do not always earn enough to feed and clothe their children.  While they are proud and would shun this kind of assistance I don’t know what else to do.  Can you help them?”

Corbin’s Legacy paid for food and clothing gift cards for all three of these families.  We also arranged for each of the children to get books, new school supplies as well as medical and dental exams so that they would all be ready to return to school.  We also sent those kids some summer toys for good measure.

No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.

“Do You Help Old People”?

GreatGrandMother

Thanks to You This Week Corbin’s Legacy helped (along with others offering equally inspiring stories) this family.
“Do you help old people” was the 1st line of a request that we received this week.  It went on, “because I am old and I’m kind of tired and I’m raising 5 great-grandchildren on my own”.   “I drive, my dead husband’s old truck.  Gets me where I need to go. I hate to say it but I gets a little assistance from the government even though I don’t want them to know my business and it ain’t enough to keep food in the house, clothes and shoes on these kids”.   So, we called her to get more information, like a name, and address, and to see how we could best assist.
Corbin’s Legacy paid for food and clothing gift cards for the children. We also arranged for them to have free (thanks to the healthcare providers that we contacted) medical examinations (she was unsure if the children had been vaccinated) and dental exams (they had never been to a dentist) so that they would be allowed to go back to public elementary school in the Fall.
We are grateful to you, our supporters, and the healthcare providers for allowing us to negotiate and participate in a healthy and life changing outcome for these children.
No child should struggle. No parent (grand-parent or great-grandparent) should feel powerless.

Sharing is Caring

Swimming

Corbin LOVED being a day camp counselor.  She would come home every night and make us laugh with stories of the day.  Our all-time favorite was her recounting of the annual “Salami Day” events.  🙂

And so, Thanks To You, this week we are happy to report that Corbin’s Legacy has assisted children in need in Day Camps across the country.  Here is one great highlight:

We were contacted by 2 teenagers who are working as counselors in a day camp dedicated to serving at risk children aged 5-12.  The camp is 5 days a week from 9-3.  Transportation is provided but lunch and swim gear (suit, goggles, flop flops and towels) are not.  These counselors (who themselves suffer from food insecurity) noticed that 6 of their 13 campers had no lunches and did not swim.  While they were happy to bring any extra food that they could find and divide their lunches up every day to give to their campers, providing swim gear for them proved more complicated.  “They are not our size”.  So, these 2 counselors went on Facebook and typed in “help kids”, found Corbin’s Legacy and filled in the 9 line request form.  We contacted the camp and spoke to these two caring 16 year olds and then (because they are minors) the director who told us that there are 150 kids at the camp, 60 of which regularly go without lunch or swimming.

Corbin’s Legacy purchased 60 swim suits, towels, goggles and flip flops and complete lunches for those children every day for the rest of the camp season.  We also sent food gifts cards to the two counselors for good measure.

We are grateful to you, our supporters, the counselors and the camp director for allowing us to negotiate and participate in a safe and life changing solution for these children.

No child should struggle. No parent should feel powerless.
